Imagine a lighting source that is cool to the touch, portable, and self-contained with no cables to run. It uses 95% less energy than conventional lights. It has lamp life of over 50,000 hours. Too good to be true? Not anymore because this is Light Emitting Diode (LED) lighting and the future is now.

At their annual international trade show, Lightfair International, broke their record for exhibitor space and attendees, but the real winner of the show was LED technology, which is estimated to replace the the incandescent light bulb and the compact fluorescent lamp (CFL) sometime in the next decade.

Here is a video explaining why LED lighting is here to stay:

The reason incandescents are not a long-term viable source of lighting is due to The Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 which will ban 100-watt incandescents in 2012, 75-watts in 2013, and 60- and 40-watt bulbs in 2014. The reason for this act is pretty simple: Incandescents convert less than 10% of their energy into light while the rest is heat. More efficient light sources can save billions of dollars, reduce dependence on foreign oil, and reduce greenhouse gases.

Today, about 80% of all lighting consist of incandescent bulbs or compact fluorescent. However, LED lighting is expected to become more popular as the wattage improves and the cost continues to decrease.

“Light is something people have always needed,” said Brent Sharenow, CFO of SWITCH Lighting. “This (LED) is a light source people will want.”
